Online shopping is extremely popular in today’s society, especially when you have inexpensive options, like Shein and Temu. Fast fashion for cheap pulls in consumers to each company.
Both Shein and Temu offer highly affordable products. Thousands of items are shipped across the US every day from each brand. As well as both offering games on their apps and websites to earn points which in turn allows customers free items. Both pull in younger audiences.
Temu, established in 2022 carries the orange logo and is known for cheap everything. Temu stands for “Team Up, Price Down,” which makes sense for the extremely cheap items offered by the company.
Temu is a branch of the Chinese company Pinduoduo. Which is basically the same thing as Temu, except Pinduoduo has an agricultural standing in the Chinese economy, on top off the randomness that is on Temu.
Products available for purchase on Temu include everything from clothes to kitchen utensils, toys to electronics and everything else you could imagine. Like Shein, both pride themselves on their fast fashion trends for cheap.
Shein stands for “She-in”, like she in style and has been running since 2008. Which makes sense for the fast fashion Shein provides. Shein tends to target a younger clientele where they can find the hottest fashion trends for cheap.
Fast fashion, however, comes with many controversies.
Shein stays amidst the controversy, and not just because of their working conditions:
- Shein emitted more carbon dioxide in 2023 than 4 coal power plants combined would in a year.
- Shein has been accused of overproduction, excessive carbon emissions, chemical pollution and the well-known labor violations.
- Microplastics found in Shein’s synthetic fabrics could take between 20 and 200 years to decompose.
Temu is not in the clear, unfortunately.
- Also accused of fraudulent workplace activity, forcing workers to work excess hours, Temu does not manufacture any of their products. This is why you don’t hear the severity of their issues.
- Connecting customers directly to the manufacturer is how temu rolls out cheap products in a quick fashion.
Shein and Temu have also been caught in scandals stealing other artists’ designs and selling them for cheap. You can be certain, Shein and Temu will both be quick and inexpensive for your fast fashion needs, but is it worth it?
