How to Keep Fashion Sustainable

When people think of fashion they only think about the latest trend, the most iconic celebrity, or the top designer; however, there’s more to it than that. Fashion is actually one of the most leading pollutants in our society, and unfortunately, there are so many negative effects that fill the industry. Even though there are many cons, fashion can be a really great thing, especially when people become educated about what they’re wearing. If you want to help keep the fashion field sustainable, meaning more earth-friendly, then I have some easy tips and information to help you do so.

Say No to Animals

Here’s a list of some companies that have fallen victim to PETA (People for Ethical Treatment of Animals) for using animals to create some of their products:

Lululemon at one point was using geese to make some of their outerwear. The feathers from the geese are what helps with insulation in some heavier jackets. Since they were caught in the cross-fire of such a controversy, they have stated that they plan to become a more sustainable company, along with other brands such as The North Face.

Adidas also met protestors when they were caught using the skin of kangaroos to help create high-end cleats. Known as the largest purchaser of kangaroo skins in the industry, and it is unknown whether or not they have yet to halt such production.

These were just a couple of the many companies that have used or still do use animals to create “quality” products.

Know Who You’re Buying From

We all love a good deal on clothes, but sometimes those deals come with a cost to others. We don’t always pay attention to where our clothes come from, and there are many countries that still help create clothes for very little pay in return. So, yes, sweatshops, unfortunately, still exist.

Forever 21

Forever 21 is a very well-known store, especially for their great deals and cheap, trendy garments. Although, a lot of their products are made in harsh ways in countries such as Bangladesh, where workers are barely paid anything and are found working in hazardous conditions.

Walmart is another company whose products were found in the collapse of a building in Bangladesh, that held a sweatshop and many defenseless lives.

H&M was very similar to Walmart, however, the company has since aimed for more sustainable ways of production.

Recycle Clothes

This is one of the biggest ways that we can help keep the fashion industry sustainable. The average American throws away about 65 pounds of clothing per year, which is crazy if you really think about it!

Donating is always a good idea rather than throwing away unused clothing, it helps more than just the planet by also helping some people who may not be able to afford shopping at other stores.

Thrift shopping

Thrift shopping is the same concept as donating, it helps save the planet from all of those unused clothes being thrown away.

Re-using fabrics/materials

Re-using fabrics/materials is smart and effective when it comes to sustainability. Other garments could be made, or details could be added.

There are so many ways to help save the planet and be more sustainable, especially when it comes to the fashion industry. Be aware of what you’re wearing, where the products are coming from, and how you can recycle some of your unused clothing. These are all steps that are easy to take, with a little extra effort and more knowledge. Together, we can make the world a better and safer place while still expressing ourselves through what we wear. It’s all part of a chain reaction, so start now and lead by example and watch others follow as you begin to change the world!
